Excerpt from March 5, 2006 Sermon

Key Text: Mark 4:35-41
On the same day, when the evening had come, Jesus said to the disciples, let us cross over to the other side.  When they left the multitude, they went into the ship.  Other little boats were also with Him.  Soon a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat against the ship so that it was filling with water, and was about to sink.  Jesus was asleep on a pillow.  They awoke Him and asked, "Master, do you not care that we are perishing?"  He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, "Peace, be still!"  And the wind ceased and there was a great calm over the sea.  They said to one another, "What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?"

I'm thinking about storms today...storms of sickness, storms of trouble and trials, storms of fear, storms of doubt, and storms of sorrow.  But, I want you to know there is One who can calm all your storms...His name is Jesus.  Jesus speaks the words, "Peace be still", and all your storms are calmed.  He knows your need even before you ask.  "Peace I give you," He says.  So when you are under attack by storms, don't you give up!  Hold on.  He will calm the troubled waters of your very soul.  Just wait on Him.  He will answer your prayer in His way and His time.

Your calmness cannot be found in a bottle, or a drug, but in the calm assurance of Jesus Christ.  Just know that if you have Jesus, the storms can rage all around you, but you will remain safe in His loving care.

One thousand days of storms with Jesus, is worth more than one day of sunshine without Him.

In your storms what are you going to hold onto?  Don't hold on to the ship; the ship is going down.  Don't hold on to a friend, he is going down, too.  Let me tell you what to do -- in time of your storms reach out and take hold of God's hand.  He's the only safe harbor.
